Harete Hipango is a lawyer and proud Whanganui local. Both she and her husband Dean MacFater are mana whenua of the area, with Harete having affiliations with Te Atihaunui a Paparangi, Ngati Apa and Nga Rauru.
Harete graduated from the University of Auckland with an LLB in 1991, and has worked extensively in general practice (both public and private) in family, mental health, youth justice, child welfare, criminal, Maori land and mediation. She has also served the community in governance roles including the Whanganui District Health Board.
Harete considers her greatest achievement her three adult children – Paparangi, Keepa, and Roimata.
